101693 at Rose Hill, Marple (20/3/03)
Description: Due to problems with their new Class 175 diesel units, the erstwhile First North Western (FNW) retained six Class 101 diesel multiple units into 2003. Despite being something of an anachronism in the modern railway scene, the veteran units were fitted with Train Protection and Warning Systems at Newton Heath depot to allow them to continue in service beyond their planned March 2003 withdrawal date. Painted in obsolete Strathclyde PTE orange livery, a legacy from its former career in Scotland, no. 101693 forms the 1252 service to Manchester Piccadilly.
Post Script: The FNW Class 101 units were finally withdrawn on 31 December 2003. The units were taken out of service because they are fitted with halon fire extinguishers. European law from 1 January 2004 banned the use of such extinguishers. FNW decided that modifying the fire extinguisher system was not cost effective, thus bringing to an end to the 45-year career of the Class 101s.

101 bashes

That picture brings back some memories. I did quite a few bashes out of Picadilly on Christmas Eve 2003 to Marple, Rose Hill etc. Sad to see them go. I did find 'Daisy' about a year later at the Elsecar Heritage Centre in South Yorkshire.

101 Bashes - reply

I'm glad that you like the photo. It's always good to add some nostalgia shots as well as my new photos.
At least several Class 101s have been preserved which is a good thing.
I will dig out some more of my older pre-digital photos now that my scanner is working!
